It’s true that Produce 101 was incredibly popular, but I also felt that the Produce series never really fit Korea’s idol system. It fueled solo stan culture even more, and Produce 48 in particular seemed to bring in a wave of hardcore Japan-obsessed fans. That’s when K-pop started to gradually lose its identity, in my opinion.

It may have been profitable in the short term by tapping into the Japanese market, but in the long run it felt like K-pop became increasingly dominated by otaku culture. K-pop, which had been dragged into the mainstream by die-hard fangirls, slowly started slipping back into a more niche space as toxic fandom culture took hold. It ended up feeling more and more like the Japanese idol scene.

And on top of that, they started importing those nasally vocal styles from Japan. They should just create a local Japanese group and debut them there instead of bringing that style into K-pop. Every time I listen to a Korean idol song with that kind of singing, it feels like an assault on my ears. Seriously
