Where did things go wrong for BLACKPINK’s 10th anniversary? Even the day before the debut anniversary, neither the venue nor the time for the fan event had been finalized.
YG Entertainment announced the BLACKPINK 10th-anniversary fan event on the 6th. The plan was to hold an in-person event for 40 paid Weverse members at a location in Seoul on the 8th.
They did not even specify which members would attend, adding a caveat that only “members available according to their schedules” would be present. Furthermore, the application window was a mere nine hours long, leaving the undeniable impression of a hastily thrown-together event.
However, it would be unfair to place all the blame on YG. It is known that the agency had long proposed various plans for the 10th-anniversary event, but communication with the members was not smooth during the process.
It appears there were issues regarding both YG’s planning and the members’ cooperation, making it difficult to organize a large-scale fan meeting.
According to Dispatch, the 10th-anniversary event was essentially a hastily arranged affair; two members suddenly expressed a desire to attend, and the other two had to scramble to adjust their schedules.
Of course, there are still hurdles to overcome even after confirming the attendance of the full group. Coordinating a time for all four members to gather is no easy task; under the current circumstances, the event is likely to be limited to daytime hours rather than the evening.
The fan event is scheduled to take place at the National Museum of Korea, though the specific venue within the complex has not yet been finalized. YG and the museum are currently in the process of coordinating the details.
A representative from the museum told Dispatch, “We receive nearly 40,000 visitors a day,” adding, “We are discussing arrangements that ensure the event does not disrupt the flow of regular visitors.”
In the K-pop scene, a 10th anniversary holds immense significance. Most idol groups disband before even reaching the seven-year mark; thus, ten years represents a milestone achieved only by top-tier groups.
A K-pop industry insider commented, “YG relies solely on BLACKPINK’s intellectual property (IP), yet the artists themselves need to be active.” They added, “YG’s leadership has been lacking, and the members have prioritized individual activities. Consequently, fans are facing a disappointing 10th anniversary.”
Meanwhile, the group contract between YG and BLACKPINK is reportedly nearing its expiration. Discussions regarding contract renewal have not yet begun in earnest, and there is speculation that the current situation could serve as a variable affecting those talks.
