The controversy began after it was revealed that Ha Young’s great-grandfather, and A’s grandfather, Ahn Sang-ho, was listed as a council member of the Daejeong Industrial Friendship Association, a pro-Japanese organization.

A said, “We have confirmed that my grandfather’s name does appear on the list of council members of the Daejeong Industrial Friendship Association. As a descendant, I feel deeply troubled knowing that such a record exists in connection with such a serious historical issue.”

He also explained that when the allegations first emerged, the family’s initial response that they were “completely unfounded” was influenced by stories that had been passed down through generations about his grandfather’s relationship with Prince Uihwa.

A explained the relationship between Ahn Sang-ho and Prince Uihwa by citing a book he owns, Pioneers of Korean Medicine. He said, “The author, Jeong Gu-chung, said that he had heard this directly from Prince Uihwa, and mentioned the allegations that Ahn Sang-ho had poisoned Emperor Gojong.”

The book states that when Prince Uihwa was asked why Ahn Sang-ho had been suspected of poisoning Gojong, he reportedly replied that it made no sense because Ahn had remained by the Emperor’s side until his death. The book attributed the rumor to the public’s temporary misunderstanding and the widespread anger and grief over the loss of the nation at the time.

A said, “I understand Prince Uihwa to have been a historical figure who strongly expressed his opposition to Japanese rule. When my grandfather was working at Tokyo Jikei University School of Medicine, he was responsible for treating Prince Uihwa. Prince Uihwa encouraged him to return to Korea as soon as possible and serve the Korean people, which led him to decide to return home. Since my grandfather had always been close to Prince Uihwa, I never imagined that he could be implicated in allegations of pro-Japanese collaboration.”

A also explained, “After Korea was annexed by Japan, Japanese doctors organized the Keijo Medical Association. In response, Ahn Sang-ho gathered Korean doctors in 1915 and independently established the Hansung Medical Association, serving as its first president. This organization eventually developed into what is now the Korean Medical Association.”

He also addressed another piece of evidence cited in the pro-Japanese controversy: a 1918 article in the Maeil Shinbo that described Ahn Sang-ho as an example of “Japan and Korea as One” after he married a Japanese woman and adopted a Japanese-style lifestyle.

A said, “It is true that Ahn Sang-ho’s wife, my grandmother, was Japanese. Through this controversy, I have learned about the significance of the article that appeared in the Maeil Shinbo at the time.”

He continued, “To add some context, as I understand it, my grandfather’s marriage to a Japanese woman came about because Prince Uihwa introduced him to a woman who was working there while he was staying in Tokyo, and the two eventually married. However, I had never thought of his marriage to a Japanese woman itself as something connected to pro-Japanese collaboration.”

A recalled, “According to what my grandmother told me, my grandfather specifically told her that even after his death, she should remain in Korea, raise their children there, and encourage them to contribute to society as much as possible. I remember my grandmother from my childhood always wearing hanbok while taking care of her grandchildren and personally working on the farm.”

Finally, Ha Young’s father said, “This controversy has given us an opportunity to take another look at the history surrounding our ancestors.”

He continued:

“Because of this incident, I am going back and carefully examining how my grandfather lived throughout history, from the beginning. I have absolutely no intention of glorifying my grandfather’s past simply because he was a member of our family. Above all, I sincerely apologize for causing concern through this controversy involving our history. Going forward, I want to study and learn history again with an even more careful and humble attitude, reflect on what our family should do as descendants, put those thoughts into practice, and live humbly.”
