[theqoo] HA YOUNG'S HANDWRITTEN LETTER

This is Ha Young.

First, I bow my head and sincerely apologize for causing great disappointment and hurt through matters concerning my great-grandfather. Recently, after learning about the past actions of my great-grandfather, Ahn Sang-ho, I have been reflecting on my family’s history with a heavy heart.

Until now, I only knew fragments of my great-grandfather’s life through stories passed down by my family. Shamefully, while in that state of ignorance, I brought up stories about him on various occasions as though they were a source of family pride.

Through this incident, as I personally looked into relevant materials, I came to learn about my great-grandfather’s pro-Japanese activities. I deeply regret having spoken casually about my family history without properly understanding the painful history our country endured during the Japanese colonial period.

Furthermore, when the controversy was first raised, a statement was issued through my agency saying that the allegations were “completely unfounded,” even though I myself did not yet have an accurate understanding of the facts. I also believe it was my own failing that I allowed an incorrect position to be communicated without sufficient verification. I sincerely apologize for causing even greater confusion and hurt as a result.

Because this matter is so serious and I feel deeply sorry, I spent a great deal of time wondering how best to convey my sincere apology. I also once again apologize for the delay in issuing this statement.

I do not believe that the fact that I was unaware of these things can be an excuse for turning a blind eye to that history or treating it lightly. I take those wrongdoings very seriously, and as a descendant, I sincerely apologize.

I am especially remorseful for causing concern at a time when Liberation Day is approaching, due to my own shortcomings.

I will keep this matter deeply in my heart. I will properly examine my family’s history and the era in which these events took place, and I will be more careful in how I approach and speak about history going forward. I will also do my utmost to study our history more deeply and, with respect, honor the patriots who contributed to Korea’s independence as well as everyone who worked for our country’s liberation and well-being. I will put these commitments into practice through my actions, not merely words.

Once again, I sincerely apologize to everyone whom I have caused concern or distress.
