[theqoo] “THIS IS F*CKED UP”… KIM HEECHUL, ENRAGED AT THE LIBERATION DAY KOREAN FLAG HUNG UPSIDE DOWN

Kim Heechul, a member of the group Super Junior, expressed anger over a Liberation Day banner in Incheon that depicted the South Korean flag upside down.

(t/n: For Korean’s liberation day, the flag is often depicted in that angle because independence activists would hold the flag waving from a lower-to-upper angle, which is why during Liberation Day, it’s portrayed in that angle)

On the 8th, Kim Heechul left a comment reading “This is f*cked up” along with a South Korean flag emoji on a social media post regarding the incident.

The post featured an image of the problematic banner under the headline, “Incheon City Liberation Day Banner Depicts South Korean Flag Upside Down.”

The banner was reportedly produced by Incheon City ahead of the 81st Liberation Day. However, controversy erupted online after it was discovered that the Taegeukgi (South Korean national flag) design on the banner was upside down.

Criticism ensued because the Taegeukgi, a symbol of South Korea, was depicted incorrectly on a banner intended to commemorate Liberation Day. Kim Heechul also expressed his displeasure in the comments section.

Fellow group member Choi Siwon also showed his agreement by posting a Taegeukgi emoji beneath Kim Heechul’s comment.
