[theqoo] “THEY TOLD US TO COME TO KOREA FOR K-POP”… ‘TICKETING HELL’ LEAVES ONE IN THREE FOREIGN FANS IN TEARS

A survey has revealed that K-Pop, a leading cultural phenomenon that draws people from around the world to Korea, actually presents significant barriers for foreign fans trying to secure tickets to concerts held in the country. One in three foreign fans reported facing difficulties in the process of obtaining tickets for K-Pop concerts in Korea.

On the 19th, Representative Im O-kyung of the Democratic Party of Korea (Gwangmyeong-si Gap, Gyeonggi-do), a member of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, analyzed a report on K-Pop Hallyu fandoms produced by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO; President Park Sung-hyuk). The analysis showed that among 3,604 K-Pop fans who responded to questions regarding ticket purchasing, 1,211, or 33.6%, stated that buying tickets was “difficult.”

Notably, 36.4% of fans who had previously visited Korea reported difficulties in purchasing tickets, a figure 7.3 percentage points higher than the 29.1% reported by fans who had never visited the country. The findings indicate that even for overseas fans with prior experience visiting Korea, booking concert tickets remains a challenge.

The primary issue identified was the ticketing system itself. Among the 1,211 respondents who reported difficulty purchasing tickets, 50% cited “system errors caused by high traffic” as the reason. This was followed by “insufficient inventory for individual buyers due to bulk purchases by agencies” (15.4%) and “slow internet speeds” (9.2%).

However, a noteworthy aspect of this survey is that the respondents were not merely casual, one-time tourists.

The surveyed K-pop fans attended an average of 18.8 concerts. Approximately 42% of the fans had attended 11 or more performances, clearly demonstrating a tendency to attend K-pop concerts repeatedly.

There was also significant potential demand for visits to Korea. Among the 10,955 respondents who indicated an intention to visit Korea, or who were neutral on the matter, 84.6% (9,272 individuals) stated that they wished to attend a K-pop concert in the country.

Past surveys by the Korea Tourism Organization have also shown that Hallyu tourists spend significant amounts on general shopping, accommodation, and food and beverages. As of 2019, the estimated per-capita expenditure of Hallyu tourists was $1,007, with their total domestic spending reaching approximately $1.124 billion.

1. This is “K”-pop, so how does it make sense that Koreans have the hardest time purchasing tickets?

2. They are making a fuss. Even Koreans are having a hard time buying tickets

3. That’s why whenever I attend concerts, I can’t see any Koreans around me

4. No but, can they stop coming? I can barely find a ticket for myself, f*ck

5. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋGo to a concert venue and see for yourself, when Koreans meet other Koreans, both parties are happy to see each other

6. What is this bullsh*t?

7. Because of how global K-pop has become, even Koreans have a hard time attending concerts. Are they joking right now?

8. But ticketing has always been a difficult process

9. What are we supposed to do about it? It’s hard for Korean fans when it’s held in Korea, and it’s even harder when going on an overseas tour… then f*ck

10. Even Koreans in Korea can’t even go, f*ck
